The Chronology Out of Time surveys all the dates in H. P. Lovecraft’s fiction, from the death of Abdul Alhazred in 738 to the death of Robert Blake in 1935 (each, appropriately enough, at the hands—tentacles?—of a horrific entity). The main section, largely in Lovecraft’s own language, charts the events of his universe year by year, month by month, and day by day. This approach shows how some tales closely coincide in time, in particular “The Dunwich Horror” and “The Whisperer in Darkness.” In his introduction, Cannon pays tribute to Fritz Leiber, who first addressed this topic, and discusses how Lovecraft evolved and perfected his use of dates in his stories. This is an essential guide for all Lovecraftians.
